Regardless of your heritage, where you live, or what school you went to when you were a child, one thing that the majority of us share in common is the memory of cutting obscure shapes out of scrapbooks.

We used to get super excited when the teacher would announce that today is DIY day or that it’s a free day, because that meant we can color, cut, and glue all we want.

I remember when I was in elementary school, my friends and I would run to the drawers designated for craft supplies, so we could have the first picks for the scrapbooks. We each had a job: I was placed on scrapbook paper duty, and my two other friends had colored pencils, scissors and glue.

The pure joy we would feel when we would begin cutting out shapes and gluing them together; we would cut out a yellow circle and seven yellow triangles to make a sun. But nothing compared to the pride we felt when our piece would get hung on the wall for “Back-to-school night”, and how we’d drag our parents across the class so they can hold witness to our precious art.

Art relies on your ability to see and feel; sight and touch.

But it strongly relies on creativity, as well. Don’t limit yourself, and let your mind wonder.

Set yourself free.
